Tuning Tips for Windows XP for audio processing
Turn off your visual effects:
This can be done by going to: Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance Settings>Visual Effects.
Select "Custom" and de-select the visual effect options.

Next, set the
Windows theme to "Classic". It'll make your OS look a bit more boring, by right clicking on your desktop, and
selecting "Properties", select "Windows theme" and choose "Classic".Select "Custom" and de-select the visual effect options.

Disable Power Management
Power management can be disabled by going to: Start>Settings>Control Panel>Power Management.
Set the Power Scheme to "Always On" and set "System Standby", "Turn off hard disks" and "Turn off monitor" to "Never". On Notebooks, it is not recommended to run the Notebook on its battery while working with audio programs.

Disable Screen Savers
Screen savers can cause unexpected performance glitches, so you'll want to disable them. Disable any screen savers by right clicking on your Desktop>Select "Properties" > Click on the "Screen Saver" tab and set it to "None".

Set graphic acceleration to full
Do a right-click on your desktop, select "Properties", then on "Settings", "Advanced" and the "Performance" tab. Make sure the Hardware Acceleration slider is set to "full" to reduce the load on your CPU.

Disable your system sounds
Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Sounds and select "No Sounds" as sound scheme.

Processor Scheduling should be set to "background services" and not "programs".
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced Tab > Background Services.
Enable "background services".

Disable Fast User Switching
Start > Settings > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off > Un-tick "Use Fast User Switching"

Disable power saving option for USB ports (for users that use a Native Instrument USB Audio Device , e.g. Audio 8 DJ, Audio Kontrol 1, Kore, Rig Kontrol)
It is recommended to disable power management to the USB hubs, to assure that the audio device receives enough power to work properly. XP turns this on by default. Go to the device manager (Control Panel/system/hardware) and right click a USB Root Hub to bring up properties. On the power management page, uncheck all boxes. Repeat for each hub and reboot.

Disable HyperThreading (Pentium IV computer with 3GHz or higher ONLY)
Please disable HyperThreading in the BIOS of your computer. Since every BIOS looks different, we can not exactly say how to do that, but just go into your BIOS and check if you find any entry on HyperThreading and disable it.
Switch Off Desktop Background Image
Right Click Desktop> Properties>Desktop Tab> Background "None"
Activate DMA on Hard Discs/CD ROMS
Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
Right-click Primary IDE channel and Secondary IDE channel>Properties>Advanced Settings Tab>Transfer Mode to "DMA if available" for both devices.
Disable Remote Assistance
Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Remote and un-tick allow remote assistance invitations to be sent from this computer.
Disable Remote Desktop
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Remote
Untick "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"
Disable "Internet Synchronise Time"
Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Date and Time>Internet Time
Un-tick "Automatically synchronize with internet time server".
Disable "Hide Inactive Icons"
Go to Start > Settings > Taskbar and Start Menu > Taskbar TAB
Uncheck "Hide Inactive Icons".
Disable "Automatic Desktop Cleanup Wizard"
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Desktop>Customise Desktop and untick "Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days"
Disable Disc Indexing Service
Right-click on Start>Explorer>right-click Each Disc> Properties.
Un-tick "Allow Indexing Service to index this disc for fast file searching" - this will lead to a message if the option should be applied to all directories. Choose "yes..." and wait, until procedure is finished.
Disable Error Reporting
You can use this for troubleshooting, but you can also disable it. Go to Control Panel>System>Advanced and choose "Disable" to disable error reporting.
Disable MSN Messenger (XP Pro only)
If you only want to stop it running and prefer to leave it on the machine in case you ever decide to use it, you can go to Start> Run and enter gpedit.msc. Then go to: Computer Configuration>Administrative Template>Windows Components>Windows Messenger >"Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run" and choose "Enabled".

Very helpful indeed, bought an XP for dummies booklet but it didn't relate specific simple audio fixing solutions, this is short ,simple & effective. Cleared up my knowledge and solved part of my problems. Thanks NI
Trobleshooting
Useless, go fuck yourselves NI
U S E L E S S ! ! ! KEEP HAVING THE SAME F..... PROBLEM!
Useless....Still don't fix the pro!!!
Thanks a lot. This is great stuff.
I've done all these steps and audio/midi receive still locks up when play fast repeatative passages using KORE 2 > Kontakt Player 2 > Prominy SC
If none of these tips help be sure to up the latency. Also try changing settings in Tracktor. Go to Preferences > Loading > Deck cashe size then lower it. Another tip is Preferences > Tranport > Key Lock Quality and set it to slow CPU. Having a slow PC and be helped by installing more ram on the main board. I recommend having 2 gb of ram. Defrag the hard disk. Are you running only one hard disk drive on your computer? You may have problems with your hard disk drive attempting to read from Windows, the Tracktor application and audio file at the same time. Try moving all you Audio files to second drive. By the way, these same tips apply to video editing.
Is a very usefull set of tips. But i wonder if the services should be given priority over programs. Native runs as program : Driver buffering as services? Sad to see that there are no Real time scheduling options in Windows. Least for me it is a trial : and hope toi get all running as plugins on linux : that is the way to go
