Tuning Tips for Windows Vista for audio processing
Note: This is a guide that shows you how to get more performance out of your computer under Vista, it is not looking at compatibility questions regarding drivers, 64Bit versions etc... For information on this topic, please visit the Windows Vista Compatibility page here.
Deactivate User Account Control (UAC)
Go to the START Menu. In the START SEARCH, type "msconfig" and press enter.The SYSTEM CONFIGURATION window will pop-up. Under the tab "tools" scroll down till you find "Disable UAP" or "Disable UAC" (in the latest Vista version). Click on that line. Then press the
Turn off your Visual Effects
Go to the START Menu. In the START SEARCH, type "Performance Information and Tools" and press enter. The Performance Information and Tools home page will pop-up. Please select the line that reads: ADJUST VISUAL EFFECTS. The PERFORMANCE OPTIONS window will pop-up. Select "ADJUST FOR BEST PERFORMANCE" and this will unselect all the visual effect options. Especially Vista's "Aero" Theme or graphic user interface (GUI) can consume a huge amount of system resources, so it is recommended to disable this.
Windows Theme
Next, set the Windows theme to "Standard". Go to the START Menu. In the START SEARCH, type "Personalization" and press enter. The Personalization home page will pop-up. Please select the line that reads: WINDOWS COLOR AND APPEARENCE. Next select the line that reads: OPEN CLASSIC APPEARENCE PROPERTIES FOR MORE COLOR OPTIONS. Lastly, please choose "WINDOWS STANDARD". Click on OK (button) to close.
Disable Screen Savers
Screen savers can cause unexpected performance and sound glitches, so you'll want to disable them. Go to the START Menu. In the START SEARCH, type "Personalization" and press enter. The Personalization home page will pop-up. Please select the line that reads: SCREEN SAVER. The SCREEN SAVER SETTINGS windows will pop-up.In the drop-down menu, pleaset set it to "None". Click OK (button) to close this window.
Disable Power Management
Go to Go to the START Menu. In the START SEARCH, type "Power Options" and press enter. The Power Options home page will pop-up. Please select High Performance and then atfer, select the line that reads: CHANGE PALN SETTINGS and then make sure all options are set to "Never".
Disable your system sounds
Go to the START Menu. In the START SEARCH, type "Personalization" and press enter. The Personalization home page will pop-up. Please select the line that reads: SOUNDS. The SOUND window will pop-up. In the drop-down menu, please set set it to "No Sounds". Click OK (button) to close this window.
Disable power saving option for USB ports (for users that use a Native Instrument USB Audio Device , e.g. Audio 8 DJ, Audio Kontrol 1, Kore, Rig Kontrol)
It is recommended to disable power management to the USB hubs, to assure that the audio device receives enough power to work properly. Windows enables this option by default. Go to the START Menu. In the START SEARCH, type "Device Manager" and press enter. The DEVICE MANAGER window will pop-up. Now select (left double click on) the line that reads: "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Then right click on the line that reads: USB ROOT HUB. This will bring up a menu please select PROPERTIES. On the "Power Management" tab, uncheck all boxes. Repeat for each and every USB ROOT HUB and restart the system.
Disable HyperThreading (Pentium IV computer with 3GHz or higher ONLY)
Please disable HyperThreading in the BIOS of your computer. Since every BIOS looks and behaves different, we can not exactly say how to do that, You may want to consult with your owners manual for the system or research online with the manufacture's website or technical support. But basically just go into your BIOS and check if you find any entry or option on HyperThreading and disable it.

Switch Off Desktop Background Image
Right Click Desktop> Properties>Desktop Tab> Background "None"
Disable Windows Security Center (ONLY if you do not go online with the computer!!!!)
Go to the START Menu. In the START SEARCH, type "Security Center" and press enter. The Windows Security Center home page will pop-up.
Step 1: Please select the line that reads: WINDOWS UPDATE on the left-hand side. At this new window please select the line that reads: CHANGE SETTINGS on the left-hand side.Then click on (select)the option that reads: NEVER CHECK FOR UPDATES. After click on the OK (button) to close.
Step 2: Please select the line that reads: WINDOWS FIREWALL on the left-hand side. At this new window please select the line that reads: CHANGE SETTINGS on the right-hand side.Then the WINDOWS FIREWALL SETTINGS windows will pop-up. Please click on (select)the option that reads: OFF. After click on the OK (button) to close.
Step 3: Please select the line that reads: WINDOWS DEFENDER on the left-hand side. At this new window please select the menu option that reads: TOOL on the center of the WINDOWS DEFENDER home page.Then uncheck (unselect) the box that reads: AUTOMATICALLY SCAN MY COMPUTER . After click on the SAVE (button) to close.
Final Step: Please note that the Operating System (OS) will tell you that in this state you are at risk. To stop these reminders, at The Windows Security Center home page please select the line that reads: CHANGE THE WAY SECURITY CENTER ALERTS ME on the left-hand side. At the WINDOWS SECURITY CENTER window that will pop-up. Please select the line that reads: DON"T NOTIFY ME AND DON"T DISPLAY THE ICON.
Don't make these adjustments if you decide to go online with your computer.

I have been having been getting noise crackles from day one with Traktor. I have optimized this system beyond imagine and have done possibly every step imaginable and its still not working. Between the crackles and the constant program freezing, i'm beyond frustrated!
i used scratch on imb 1.4, 1 G or ram, xp and never had drop outs, now i bought dell xps 1530 dual core 2,4 with 4 G of ram, vista and have drop outs like crazy. I did optimization and it DOES NOT HELP. In my opinion as of january 2009 Native Instruments Traktor Scrtach is not compatible with Vista, but runs great on XP.

Helpful, but, please remember people; this stuff is the pure beginners basics for system tweaking. For those of you who are more adventurous and want to tweak to get every last bit of power you will have to dive into the registry and perhaps use audio optimised distributions of winxp (for example). For the tech-heads who want maximum performance, a quick look at ubuntu linux and it's audio distributions maybe more your thing. You will have to mess around with wine and audio configuring, though, to get the best out of the os. I suggest trying ubuntu studio 32bit first. Check to see if you soundcard is supported before trying.
how do you disable desktop background? i see no options such as the one listed here.

The creen shot look difference from win XP compare to win Vista....cannt adjusted the latency in win Vista, to much noise ..... please help me out if you have good tone from GR3 with win Vista.... thanks a bunch,,,,,
Did the optimization but still have Freeze-ups with my turntables every 25 secods (1 second freezes). Only when latency is all the way up to 83ms will it work smoothly. Running it with a XPS M1530, Intel Core 2 Duo Pro T9300 (2.5GHz/800MHzFSB, 6M L2 Cache 7200 rpm HD). Very frustrating to build such a powerful machine and still cant get Traktor to run properly :( Anybody have any suggestions?
I bought a mixer the name of bcd 3000 and I get a cd next to it traktor 3 el and I download evrything as they show ... first it seems everything ok but suddenly when start to mix the songs or search a song the player is locking and stoping to play I am not a good computer user can you help of this I have a computer that everything stands norwegian language and here is everything is english

pretty nice tips for beginners.. however, recent laptops should have enough power to run even without those tuning. SHOULD!!! still have the same probs after all. now here's what i found out and something that could help some of you. for those of u who bought a computer with nvidia graphics card and use vista.. tough luck. after disabling the graphics driver in the control panel the latency should be gone. that's what i noticed and what DPC latency checker says as well. but not really practicable. however, xp has a much lower latency by default. seems like its all about the new kernel and driver model in vista. nothing that can be "fixed" by the NI guys imho.
Just got an Newmark Omni which came with Traktor 3 LE, This runs ok on my Vista PC, I've just downloaded the demo of Traktor Pro and the sound output is all distorted, I've tried all the above fixes and still get the same. I'm curently using the internal soundcard RealteK AC97 output.
When i turn on trktor the main volume bars are at peak even with my speakers turned off. i tried the external mixer option and the bars lower but i still get no sound. It works for about 2minutes on start up but then i lose sound..What can i do to fix it? I hav the numark DJi/o and already went to numark website and downloaded the updated drivers..i am running windows vista on a macbook pro

Still can't get the timecode control to calibrate. the cd scope panel say cd-rst not cd-min-on. The audio 8 dj is set on cd/line in. I playnthe control cd and it keep showing cd skipping and then it might freeze. I really need some help.
That's it. I'm buying a MAC. Vista fails. I am still hoping for the performance I saw in the Youtube videos. I better read the comments from the MAC users before I drop cash on a MAC.
After following all the above protocol I still cannot activate product serial # 84139-59917-85084-13388-97703 as the activate button is not lite up. Yet....the Kontakt 2 player is registered. Very frustrating....
still everything failes of doing what its programed for maschine still highpeaks cpu min 50% and i have 4 Gb ram and my pc does not want to recongnize my audio kontrol but then again maschine finds him sometimes but crashes after 30 40 minutes i hate vista should of bought mac i suppose but still i think there is a prob with the maschine and audio kontrol driver as wel
I can not get my maschine to work. I keep getting an error message at start up, then the system shuts down. I called customer service and he blew me off and directed me hear. I still dont see the solution to my problem. Anyone else having problems with Maschine at start up? I am using Vista and it sucks.
I want to Add Turn off LAN,WLAN and Bluetruth for Vista. so work well.
I called tech support and they told me to look at this to see if it would be helpfull. Unfortunately this was not helpfull for me. I am still experiencing drop outs and clicks with in my Guitar Rig 3 program!
Thanks for the detailed suggestions. Just got a new lappy and I've not got many problems with Vista so far - but I'm gonna throw out all the unnecessary crap anyhow.
What a poorly written and maintained piece of software Traktor 3 is, especially where Vista is concerned. I have been involved in projects that require programmers and developers and I have never used software that need so much tweaking of the users PC and with updates coming out my ears... So very, very disappointed in NI and their lame efforts in keeping up with technology so that NI can deliver software that actually works - RUBBISH!

I am now on my 3rd DJ software product. I'm running a Dell Studio 1537, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, VISTA 64 Bit OS. I didn't have any input in picking out this laptop - it was a gift. I'm very accustomed to XP. I LOVE the sound that comes out of the Audio 4 DJ, WHEN IT DOESN'T STALL ON ME. I made all of the corrections listed in this article. No difference in performance. If anything, it got worse. SOme of my tracks are now playing HIGHLY Distorted. Should I just return this software, "downgrade" to XP and start from scratch? I'm thinking this will never work on Vista 64 Bit.
Hmmm. These tips are useless. Have done all of them and Scratch still drops out and the sound goes mental every 30mins or so....thats if it works at all. My machine does have an Nividea gfx card so maybe I'll look at that when I get home. Still you'd think a dual core 2.4ghz with 4 gigs of ram should run this fine. I used to run serato on an absolute pile of crap and I could have photoshop and other programs running at the same time and it was always fine. I'm really not impressed with this. Vista or NI for releasing something without testing it properly at all. Nearly everyone I speak to is having these problems and getting Xp. Will Windows 7 make a diff?

Although I already knew what to do to get the bewt performance out of my Vista machine...it's nice to see companies tell their clients what to do in order to get optimum performance in any given circumstance. Good job :)
so pleased im only trying to get a free version of guitar rig to run. its obviously way too much for my new vista laptop (2009), im releived i didnt spend any money on full price software. 4 hours pissing about and nothing.
this program would have to b the biggest waste of money and time? just won't to play music but it seems i never will.? with this so called program ?.that they could not of done there homework on. but we pay$ the price. .if i had a wish i would wish i never bought this shit
I just bought a new notebook (Acer 2x2.1GHz, 4GB Ram, Vista) for Traktor Scratch Pro (with AudioDJ8) cause it usually runs with minor but audible sound distortions on my older notebook (Acer 1.4h GHz, 2GB Ram, XP). But on the new notebook, Traktor runs even worse with frequent and long freezes (1s) and sound crackles. My last hope is to install XP on the new notebook, unfortunately I have no license left. Had I known this I would have bought some other software...
Good tips. My Maschine seems to run well with these tips and only 2 gb RAM.

In good faith I purchased Traktor Scratch Duo, It appears that this program does not work well with HP Dv5-1235DX/core-2 Duo T6400. I have tried all your tuning tips and found that nothing works. After 15 minutes of playing time my screen freezes. It appears that you were out just to make a fast dollar THANKS.
